How Player Props Are Settled: Starters, Subs and Voids
Do player props void if the player doesn't start? How bookmakers settle shots, cards and tackles props: Opta stats, subs, red cards, extra time and abandonment.

Player props do not usually void just because the player is on the bench. At most UK bookmakers a player prop stands if the player gets on the pitch for any part of normal time, and is void only if he never plays. Some bookmakers, notably bet365, void the bet if the player does not start. Your bookmaker’s football rules decide which applies.
That one rule changes which bets you are really making. Below is how settlement works from team sheet to final stat, with the published rules of four UK bookmakers and 2025/26 Fobal data on how often each scenario happens.
27.2%
of matchday-squad places never got on the pitch
Fobal, 2025/26, 89,061 squad places
56.3%
of named substitutes stayed on the bench
29.3%
of substitute appearances lasted 10 minutes or less
0.52%
of starters were off before minute 30
Who decides the stat?
The data provider named in your bookmaker’s rules decides. It is not the TV graphic or the club’s match report.
- bet365 settles match, team and player statistics on “Opta provided data” and Opta’s definitions (bet365 settlement rules).
- Sky Bet says it “will always use Opta for resulting” and warns that uefa.com and fifa.com use a different provider, so their numbers can differ (Sky Bet match stat markets).
- Paddy Power and Betfair use “the final determination of Official OPTA Data” for player shots and shots on target (Paddy Power football rules, Betfair Sportsbook football rules).
- Betfred is different. It uses WhoScored for pre-built shots markets and StatsBomb for its bet builder (Betfred stats explained).
So “I saw him shoot” settles nothing. What counts is how the named provider logged the event. These are the Opta definitions that settle most disputes, from Opta’s own glossary:
| Stat | Counts | Does not count |
|---|---|---|
| Shot on target | Goals, saves, and blocks by the last defender on the line | Woodwork that stays out, blocks by any other outfield player |
| Assist | The final touch from a teammate to the scorer | Own goals, direct free kicks and corners, penalties (unless the taker passes) |
| Tackle | A legal ground challenge that takes the ball from a player in control | Interceptions, fouls |
| Foul committed | An offence penalised with a free kick or penalty | Offsides; advantage played, even if a card follows |
The blocked-shot rule decides more shots-on-target bets than any other. In 2025/26, 27.1% of player shot attempts were blocked (Fobal data, 65,038 player-matches). Each one counts as a shot and not as a shot on target. Our guide to shots versus shots on target gives the full shot definitions and shows how the split varies by position.
Animated pitch with five shots in turn: one blocked by an outfield defender (not on target), one dragged wide (not on target), one saved by the goalkeeper (on target), one scored (on target) and one cleared off the line by the last defender (on target).
Do player props void if the player doesn’t start?
Bookmakers use one of two rules, and the gap between them is bigger than it looks.
“Must start” rules. bet365’s statistics rules say: “If a selected player … does not start a match, bets will be void” (bet365 match, team and player statistics). The same applies to its player to be booked market (bet365 player performance markets). A substitute who comes on and scores twice is still void.
“Takes part” rules. Sky Bet voids player bets only “if the player does not take part in the match”, and adds: “If the named player is substituted on your bet will stand” (Sky Bet football general rules). Paddy Power and Betfair treat a player as a participant if he enters “at any point in 90 minutes play plus injury time”. A player who first appears in extra time is therefore a non-runner there.
Neither rule is simply better for you. Under a “must start” rule, every bet on a benched player comes back. Under a “takes part” rule, many of those bets go live on a player who gets very little time.
The chart at the top of this page shows where all 89,061 matchday-squad places went in 2025/26 across the top five leagues, the Champions League and the Europa League. Every starter played, so the 27.2% who never got on the pitch were all named substitutes. For the bench alone:
- 56.3% of named substitutes never came on. A pre-match bet on any of them is void under both rules.
- 43.7% did come on. Under a “takes part” rule these bets stand, and 29.3% of those appearances lasted 10 minutes or less.
- Only 6.6% of those cameos of 10 minutes or less produced a shot on target, and 3.9% produced a yellow card.
If you bet on a player who might start on the bench, a “takes part” rule turns many of those bets into live bets on a player with very few minutes, which is bad news for an over. Wait for the team sheet, or use a bookmaker whose rule matches the bet you want. Our guide to expected minutes shows how to price the minutes risk itself.
What if he is subbed off early or sent off?
Once the player has started, the bet stands under both rules. By default it settles on whatever he recorded, however short his match. The big exception, a substitution feature that hands the bet to his replacement, is covered below.
- Early substitutions. Only 0.52% of starters went off before minute 30, and 84% of those were flagged as injuries. 4.3% were off by half-time. You cannot avoid this risk, but it is small.
- Red cards. 0.75% of starters were sent off. The bet stands on his stats up to the dismissal. In a “to be booked” market the red itself usually counts: bet365 says “both yellow and red cards count”.
- Full matches. 61.1% of starters are credited with 90 minutes. The feed caps minutes at 90, so a player taken off in stoppage time also shows 90.
When the bet passes to his replacement
All four bookmakers above now run a feature that changes what an early substitution means: bet365’s Sub On Play On, Sky Bet’s Super Sub, Paddy Power’s Super Sub and Betfair’s Safe Sub. They work the same way. If your player is substituted, the bet passes to the player who replaces him, at the same odds, and what your player recorded before he went off still counts: “the cumulative total of the starter and the substitute determines the outcome”, as Goal’s explainer puts it. Eligible markets carry the feature’s icon on the market and in the bet slip. They include shots, shots on target, tackles, fouls, cards, assists and scorer bets.
The terms differ in three places:
- Competitions. Sky Bet lists all seven competitions in our data. Paddy Power and Betfair list the Premier League, Champions League and Europa League, but not La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga or Ligue 1. bet365’s terms name no competitions: the icon on the market is the test.
- Who and when. Sky Bet, Paddy Power and Betfair apply it pre-match and in-play, for new and existing customers. bet365’s terms say “new and eligible customers”, cover singles and multiples, and exclude a bet that is cashed out or already decided when the substitution happens.
- Extra time. Paddy Power and Betfair stop at 90 minutes plus stoppage time. bet365’s version runs on into extra time where it is played. Sky Bet applies it in extra time only on its 120-minute markets.
For the “1 or more” style bets these features cover, the hand-over can only add to the count. How much it adds depends on who comes on: a striker replaced by a defensive midfielder hands your shots bet to a player who rarely shoots. A red card is not a substitution, so the feature does nothing for a player who is sent off.
Cards have extra rules about who is “on the pitch”. Sky Bet counts only cards shown to players on the pitch during the 90 minutes, not to players on the bench or after the game (Sky Bet football general rules). bet365’s player to be booked market ignores cards shown to managers, to substitutes and to substituted players who take no further part (bet365 player performance markets). Paddy Power counts only cards shown to players on the pitch, and none after the final whistle (Paddy Power football rules). Our player to be booked guide covers card markets in detail.
Does extra time count?
Usually not, but there is one important exception.
Sky Bet settles football bets “on the basis of 90 minutes play”, which “includes time added on by referee for stoppages”. Paddy Power and Betfair settle shots-on-target bets “on the basis of 90 minutes play (plus injury time)”.
bet365 gives player bets extra time to land. Its statistics rules list player markets, including shots, shots on target, tackles, fouls and assists, as including “Extra Time (if played)”, while its match and team statistics stop at 90 minutes (bet365 match, team and player statistics). Its May 2026 explainer describes how that works as “More Time to Win”: a player bet that has not won after 90 minutes plus injury time stays live through extra time, pre-match or in-play, and penalty shoot-outs never count (bet365: what happens to my player bet if a match goes to extra time).
So the extension is one-way: it gives an over or a “to be booked” bet 30 more minutes, and the explainer does not describe it putting a bet back at risk. If an under in a knockout tie matters to you, check how bet365 settles it before you bet. In league matches none of this applies.
What if the match is abandoned?
All four bookmakers void undecided bets when a match is abandoned before 90 minutes, and let decided ones stand. bet365: “Any match abandoned before the completion of 90 minutes play will be void except for those bets the outcome of which has already been determined” (bet365 abandoned matches).
So an over 0.5 shots on target bet that had already landed is a winner. An under on the same player is void, because it could not be decided until full time. Sky Bet, Paddy Power and Betfair also let all bets stand if a restart within three days is announced within three hours of kick-off. Abandonments are rare. In our 2025/26 data, Ligue 1’s Nantes v Toulouse was the one abandoned match, and we excluded it.
What if the stat changes after the match?
Providers do revise events. A shot can be reclassified as blocked, or a deflected goal reassigned. The question is whether the bookmaker waits.
- Sky Bet results stats markets “against data received from Opta at the point of settlement”. Its goalscorer rules add that a correction made during the game is used, but one made days later is not, and bets are not resettled. Dubious goals panel decisions are explicitly excluded (Sky Bet goalscorer rules).
- Paddy Power and Betfair settle “on the result of the game on the day that it is played”. Results changed retrospectively, “eg. dubious goals panel reviews”, do not alter settlement.
- bet365 says subsequent enquiries by official bodies are not considered for goalscorer bets. Its statistics rules do not state a time limit for stat corrections, so check your bookmaker if a disputed stat decides your bet.
One more detail from Sky Bet: a shot on target that is “pulled back for offside/a free kick” does not count.
How do the rules differ between bookmakers?
Side by side, for player shots and shots-on-target markets, as published on 20 October 2026:
| Situation | bet365 | Sky Bet | Paddy Power / Betfair |
|---|---|---|---|
| On the bench, comes on | Void (must start) | Stands | Stands (if on in normal time) |
| Never plays | Void | Void | Void |
| Starter subbed off | To replacement on Sub On Play On markets | To replacement on Super Sub markets | To replacement on Super Sub / Safe Sub markets: Premier League, UCL, UEL |
| Extra time | Bets not yet won run on | Not counted | Not counted |
| Stat provider | Opta | Opta | Opta |
| Abandoned before 90 min | Void unless decided | Void unless decided | Void unless decided |
| Later stat changes | Not stated for stats | Opta data at settlement | Ignored after the day |
Rules change, and bet builders often have their own. At Paddy Power, for example, a #WhatOddsPaddy bet is void as a whole if any player in it takes no part. Read the current page before you rely on this table.
Is “over 0.5” the same as “1+”?
Yes. Over 0.5 shots on target and “1 or more shots on target” both need at least one, and under 0.5 means none. Half-point lines cannot finish level, so there is no push. If you ever see a whole-number line, check how the bookmaker settles an exact hit before betting. The wider market vocabulary is in our guide to football player props.
A settlement checklist before you bet
- Find the participation rule. Must start, or takes part? If takes part, does a player who first appears in extra time count?
- Look for a substitution icon. On a Sub On Play On, Super Sub or Safe Sub market, an early substitution passes the bet to the replacement instead of freezing it. Check that the competition is covered.
- Check the team sheet. Under a “takes part” rule, a benched player is mostly a short-cameo bet. In 2025/26, 29.3% of substitute appearances lasted 10 minutes or less.
- Check the period. 90 minutes plus stoppage time, or extra time too, and for which bets? This matters only in cup ties.
- Know the provider. Opta, StatsBomb or something else. Don’t argue a result from a different website’s numbers.
- Learn the definitions. Blocked shots are not on target, and woodwork that stays out is off target.
- Read the bet builder rules separately. One non-runner can void the whole builder.
- Screenshot the rules page if a bet is large, because rules pages change.
On Fobal’s player pages, the match-by-match chart shows minutes under every bar, so a run of starts can be told from a run of cameos before you trust a hit rate. That matters because a hit rate built partly from cameos can mislead you in its own way.
Frequently asked questions
Do player props void if the player doesn’t start?
It depends on the bookmaker. Sky Bet, Paddy Power and Betfair let the bet stand if the player comes on at any point in normal time and void it only if he never plays. bet365 voids player statistics bets on any player who does not start. Check the player participation rule in your bookmaker’s football rules.
Does a player prop stand if the player is substituted early?
Yes. Once a player has started, or come on under a ‘takes part’ rule, the bet stands, and by default it settles on whatever he recorded. On markets marked with a substitution icon it goes further: bet365 (Sub On Play On), Sky Bet and Paddy Power (Super Sub) and Betfair (Safe Sub) pass the bet to his replacement, and both players’ output counts. Coverage differs: Paddy Power and Betfair offer it in the Premier League, Champions League and Europa League, not in La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga or Ligue 1. Early exits are rare anyway: 0.52% of starters in 2025/26 were off before minute 30.
What happens to my player prop if the player is sent off?
The bet stands, because the player took part. It settles on the stats he recorded before the red card. For ‘player to be booked’ markets, bet365 counts both yellow and red cards.
Does extra time count for player props?
Usually not. Sky Bet, Paddy Power and Betfair settle player shots and shots-on-target markets on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. bet365 is the exception: its rules list player markets as including extra time, and its own explainer says a player bet that has not won after 90 minutes plus stoppage time stays live through extra time. Penalty shoot-outs never count.
Is over 0.5 shots on target the same as 1+ shots on target?
Yes. Over 0.5 and 1 or more both need at least one shot on target, and under 0.5 means none. Half-point lines cannot finish level, so there is no push.
Who decides whether a shot was on target?
The data provider named in your bookmaker’s rules. bet365, Sky Bet, Paddy Power and Betfair all name Opta for player statistics. Betfred says it uses StatsBomb for its bet builder. Other sites, including uefa.com, can show different numbers because they use other providers.
